Adopted Homes

As a research fellow in the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) I conducted archival research that continued and expanded my previous work. In the Black Star Collection, I found materials representing adopted homes, that tie together themes of exile and otherness.

By adopted home, I signify both states of becoming – whether by choice or through force – adopted, and efforts of becoming adopted, or achieving “adoptedness”. This concept pertains to immigrants as well as to colonized indigenous groups, subjects who are introduced to other cultures and are expected to become parts of it, yet will never become a “biological” element within these adopting cultures.‫‬
